I earned a Masters degree in Broadcast Journalism from the School of Communication at Boston University in 1974 (a long, long time ago).School of Communications, Boston University After graduation, I was hired by the University of New Hampshire. I worked on a grant to film, script, and edit videotapes about federal government programs for the elderly.

This was back in the days when videotaping was done on reel-to-reel tapes. Portable color cameras were just coming on the market. Editing videotape was a time-consuming, nerve-wracking process where the slightest error could mean starting from scratch. We never dreamed that one day a filmmaker could edit videotape on a personal computer! (What was a personal computer?)

When I decided to get a book trailer, I couldn’t help reverting back to my former profession. I scripted the one-minute trailer, picking the visuals and music. Tanja from BooksGoSocial put it all together.

To Market the Book Continues

As I’ve said, “To market the book takes time and some efforts won’t pay off.” The secret for ‘rising above the herd’ is to keep up your energy and market the book everyday. In light of that, I have good news and bad news. And some ‘maybe’ news!

First the bad news:
1. Sent out three news releases to three local newspapers. So far they’ve disappeared into a dark hole. Maybe the news release sounded too much like advertising, but I always thought hometown newspapers wanted to publicize local achievements.
2. I’ve had no response to my email to the director of the Montreal Literary Festival. I am hoping to apply to sell my book during the festival.

Now for the good news:Book Front Cover
3. Sent ‘class notes’ to my three college/universities: Bates, Boston Univ. and Suffolk Univ. Also sent books to the department that reviews alumni books. I will post the results when the magazines arrive.
4. Sent an email to all the people on our recent China trip. One traveler wrote back to say she’ll buy the book.
5. Worked some more on my author page on Goodreads. I will have a giveaway on the site starting around Wednesday, Feb 11.
6. Sent an email to a book promotion website called 2Paragraphs. They publish the first two paragraphs of your novel with the cover photo and a link to Amazon.

And a ‘maybe:’
7. My email to the Community Relations Director for Barnes and Noble in Boston has not been answered. A telephone call and resubmitting the email will be done on Monday, Feb 9.

Get ready, get set, market the book!

I can hardly believe that after 2 ½ years of work, Echo from Mount Royal is published and now it’s ‘all hands on deck’ to market the book.

Books arrived 2The UPS driver delivered the first 60 books on Thursday, January 8. Couldn’t wait to take a picture. But now the real work begins to market the book! Getting the word out. Keeping three balls in the air at once.
WEEK ONE:
1. Modified my website to focus more on the book and upcoming events at which I will appear. Purchased another domain name: EchoFromMountRoyal.com. This new domain brings the user to the same site as daveriese.com
2. Added URLs on my website to direct visitors to the ebook and paperback editions on Amazon.
3. Designed and ordered business cards, postcards, and rack cards.
4. Purchased business card holders and plastic stand-up sign holders for display; padded mailers and labels for shipping books.
5. Sent a letter to the organizer of the Blue Metropolis Montreal International Literary Festival to ask if there is a way I can take part in the festival this April.
6. Joined the Author Central on Amazon where I can track sales and rankings of my book. Filled out my author page on Amazon.com.
7. Joined Goodreads as an author. Waiting to hear that I am approved.
